  • Nickname  Tony (Tone) Westwood
Birth  4 Jul 1923  18 Domville Grove, Camberwell, London, England Find all individuals with events at this location
    Gender  Male
    Military Career  Feb 1942
Tony enlisted in the Navy in February 1942, aged 18.
Tony was an AB onboard MGB 79 skippered by Lieutenant David James, when it sank in February 1943 in a bitter cold North Sea, off the Hook of Holland. He was rescued by the Germans and made a Prisoner of War in Poland (Memmingen) until May 1945. The prison was just wooden shacks in very cold winters.

He was marched from Austria to Poland by the Germans, to keep ahead of the advancing Russians, in deep winter's snow, just ordinary clothes.
His family were told he was missing believed killed.

You can just imagine his mother's face when a neighbour, who had been listening to Lord HaHa on the radio heard Tony was alive, she immediately rushed and told Tony's mother Daisy.
