History: Passengers: 350 first, 350 second, 1,500 third. Note: First British liner fitted with anti-rolling tanks. Maiden voyage: Southampton-New York, May 25, 1922. Transferred to Liverpool-New York route. Converted to troopship in World War II. Torpedoed and sunk in South Atlantic, September 12, 1942, while bound from Egypt to England via Cape Town. Heavy loss of life resulted. Sister ships: Samaria and Scythia. Similar to Franconia and Carinthia.
